Fruit Cleanse

Here is a very sustainable and easy cleanse and mild detoxification to do everyday for as long as you want while fresh fruits are available. It’s also a perfect weight loss strategy. All it requires is fresh lemons, fresh local fruit in season where you live, and warm filtered water.

Here are the steps:

  1. Upon rising, warm one litre of water (32 ounces) on the stove (not in the microwave), until the water is warmer than warm, but definitely not hot. Take it off the stove and set it on a hot pad. The reason for warming the water is so that it goes rapidly through the stomach to the small intestine and liver where it will start the cleansing process and also start colonic action for a morning elimination. (Cold water shocks the stomach and slows down digestion.)
  2. Squeeze half a fresh lemon and pour the lemon juice into a large glass. Fill the glass with the warmed water. Drink down right away. Squeeze the juice out of the other half of the lemon. Pour it in the glass, add the lemon pulp (but not the seeds), and fill the glass with the rest of the warmed water. Drink it down.
  3. Make a note of the time, because the last-but-one step will happen an hour from now.

  5. Put into a breakfast bowl any and all washed fruit you have on hand until your bowl is full: watermelon, honeydew melon, apples, figs, plums, nectarines, berries, peaches, apricots, papaya, kiwi, and grapes. Do not use bananas and avocados. Leave the bowl on the counter for the fruit to reach room temperature. (Again, you do not want to shock your stomach by eating cold fruit.)
  6. Go about your day.
  7. One hour after you finished drinking the litre of lemon water, take your bowl of fruit and any supplements that you take, plus a small glass (4 oz) of water for swallowing the supplements, and go and sit in the sun or at the table. Eat each piece of fruit quietly without distractions – save TV-watching and radio-listening and newspaper-reading for later in the day. Enjoy the different fruits in your bowl, their flavours and textures. Think of their nutrients going into your stomach and then your small intestine and from there to your liver, to cleanse, nourish, and heal every cell and tissue with their live enzymes, vitamins, and minerals.
  8. Wait at least two hours (time it on your watch) before eating lunch. The longer you can wait before your lunch – up to three hours – the greater the cleanse that is accomplished by this fruit breakfast.

Do this cleanse everyday for at least two weeks, or, if you can handle it, all summer long and into the fall and winter, as long as there is fresh fruit around. If you decide to do this cleanse with fruit that could not be growing locally at the time you are eating them (in other words, the fruit is out of season), add a pinch or two of sea salt to your bowl of fruit. It’s complicated, but, according to Dr. Jonn Matsen, your kidneys use the lack or presence of salt in the diet to understand whether it’s summer or winter and whether the fruit is local or not.

This cleanse is inspired by Eating Alive I by Dr. Jon Matsen, N.D. If you want to understand the salt and kidney linkage better, read Eating Alive I and Eating Alive II.

Best of health, naturally,
Nina

  • Your overall health depends in large part on the health of your colon. This is because all of the food you eat is processed in the colon. In due time, however, harmful toxins that are normally discarded during bowel movement builds up in our colon and these can cause health problems such as constipation, weight gain and reduced energy levels. For this reason, it is very important to do a colon cleanse.
