Fall has Arrived in the West End

Fall colours are everywhere in the West End and I’m seeing them like a tourist, since we came back from our five-week jaunt through Europe. And I’m finding it beautiful.Leaves on the sidewalk outside King George Secondary School

Blooming Hibiscus

Friends know we love Hibiscus syriacus. They sent us photos of their plant.
I’ll take my camera with me enroute to church tomorrow and take more photos of “my” hibiscus bush.

Canada Ignites Fireworks to the Godzilla Score

Not being Godzilla fans, we didn’t recognize the music that Canada had chosen for its 2008 display in the Celebration of Light last night in English Bay, Vancouver. But we sure enjoyed the show.

Swallowtail Butterfly

A couple of days ago, we had a chance to get a really good look at a swallowtail butterfly that was sipping nectar from the red geraniums in our window boxes.
Actually, at the time, we weren’t sure what kind of butterfly it was, but I went searching around the internet and came across this excellent [...]

Caucasian Wingnut

Botanically known as a Pterocarya fraxinifolia, the Caucasian wingnut that occupies the corner of Comox at Chilco in Vancouver’s West End is a superb specimen.
The tree is named for the seeds that grow on female catkins hanging between 25 cm and 50 cm, giving it a very festive appearance. Its shiny leaves are similar to [...]
